Moca of jacksonville

So, lately I've felt more so like a framer than any kind of furniture builder, Wich isn't a bad thing at all. I've spent many years framing and to be honest I miss it quite a bit.
Recently I had a cool opportunity to be a part of an installation at the museum of contemporary art here in jacksonville.
The artist name is dr. Ian Bogost and he created a video game called "simony". The game explores the acts of buying your way into the church and or heaven. So the game makes you assend the stairs into the light at the top and either earn your way to the top of the leader board Wich is projected on the wall above, or you can swipe your card at the game and you instantly become the leader.
Ian wanted a fixture that had the game elevated far from the ground that the player must climb up. We went back and fourth on designs and I think I even remember somebody mentioning buying an old staircase the airlines use to get the passengers up into the airplane. So, after going back and fourth on a few designs, Dave dough man of love joy construction came up with an ingenious design and Ian loved it! So it was settled. But this thing is 20 feet across, 20 feet deep and 12 feet high! There was an installation already in the space at the museum do building it in place at the museum was out of the question. Where could we build this monstrosity? Dave and I came to the terrifying realization that we were going to have to build it in the shop. Dave is my land lord so I figured what ever happens to the space he'd be healed half accountable! We ended up building the structure in pieces and going off of pure faith that the parts would all fit together smoothly at the moca on installation day.
We got the structure built and somehow delivered and surprising enough it all fit together perfectly! The artist and curator of the museum loved it!
This project was a fun one to work on and even better to see people being able to enjoy it as they accent their way to the top... Litterly.

Ship hatch dinning room table

A few months back a couple came to me with three "ship hatch covers". They live in a community house and throw quite a few dinner parties. They asked me if i would be willing to build them a giant dinning room table with these hatch covers. These things were large, dirty, heavy, and mean. So, after a long silent stint of staring, scratching my head, and sizing up the S.O.B.s, i had made up my mind... i dont want anything to do with these damn things, so I said, absolutely!
I had been kicked out of a dumpster almost a week earlier as i was pulling some old wooden lath out to use on another project, so I knew there were some good, old timbers they were throwing out. I went back to the old store being worked on, where just a few days earlier i had been told get the hell out of their dumpster, and got some old true 2x8 ceiling rafters. They worked perfect for the frame and legs of the table. I chose to use traditional methods of construction using almost no power tools with the exception of ripping strips of veneer on the tablesaw to conceal raw cuts. It took a bit longer to build but at the end of the day my clients were thrilled and ive been invited to not one but two dinner parties since!  -john

Violet Boutique

Building furniture is one of my favorite things in the world to do. But one of my other loves is design. Good (or bad) design can say so much about a person or place. It can tell you stories, it can show you humor, it can put you in a good mood, there's so many things a person can get from design. I have recently had the opportunity to team up with a close friend who shares similar feelings. Elizabeth Hooks has been in the world of design, spacial planning, buying, and management for almost a decade. She attended flagler college and graduated with a degree in comunications snd a minor in spanish, there she moved on to continue her schooling in luxury fashion management at savannah college of art and design and from there got a job working for a very well known women's clothing and home good store where she was a buyer, designer, and a merchandiser. She has been sought after to help with spacial planning and design from a number of boutiques and stores in Savannah, Austin, and Philly, where she has resided untill recently when her and her husband Chris were blessed with their baby girl, Margaux! Now in Jacksonville Elizabeth and I have created a company called the Hook & Co. Creative. We specialize in retail and commercial remodels, design, spacial planning, and identity concepts.
We were approached by a women's clothing boutique, called violet, to update the identity and completely remodel the look of the store. Our client couldn't of been easier to work with! She already had good bones to work with so we took some of her ideas and ran with it. Such a fun job! Thanks again Texie! -john

Out side the box.

So, with my background in the construction industry I still get some requests for projects that allows me step out of my little box I call my shop. I have always loved being out doors, and now for the last few years being in a shop producing work, of course I jumped at the opportunity to help a friend with a deck addition and out door shower. My client has good taste and knows what she wants so I knew I had my work cut out. We decided on a design for the deck and we went back and forth about the look of the actual shower enclosure. After a few days working in the blistering Florida summer sunshine I wasn't quite as excited about my decision making skills as i was sitting in an a.c. office planning my attack on the upcoming project. But that quickly turned back into excitement as the deck started to take shape. I have to admit it felt good to strap my ol' tool pouch back on after having to pull it out of an extended hibernation. I realized I missed it like an old friend, but when reunited, we hit the ground running!
The deck was built and we decided to go with a Japanese zen like look and feel for the enclosure. We wanted the shower to be a retreat for her to come home to after her long days running her boutique clothing store. Since the completion, she admitted the only time she showers indoors is when it rains.... Mission accomplished. Cheers -john
